About Zumba

The story of Zumba’s beginnings is an awesome one. Beto Perez was an aerobics instructor in Colombia. One day he arrived to teach a class and discovered he’d left his aerobics music at home...he grabbed whatever tapes (yes, tapes...this was the mid-1990s) he had in his backpack and improvised.

Luckily for him, he had great taste in music – his tapes were mostly traditional Latin salsa and meringue music and, because they didn’t exactly fit with the traditional aerobics moves, he improvised a whole new, sexy and sassy exercise...Zumba was born.

Zumba today is still all about that music – unlike other classes, the instructor barely talks and visual cues are used to direct the class through an easy-to-follow, fun-filled workout. This genuinely allows people to get lost in that hypnotic Latin rhythm and forget they’re exercising...no more clock watching!

This is a one-of-a-kind fitness programme that blows people away. The routines feature interval training sessions (shortish songs) where fast and slow cardio moves and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.

Given Zumba is now taught to over five million people in over 40,000 locations in 75 countries every week and has sold millions of DVD's, it should probably come with a ‘warning...this is addictive’ label. Zumba Fanatics want to work out – they love it and they get hooked. But what is best is that they achieve long-term benefits while having an absolute blast...and you will too.

About JB

Originally from Australia, I married a Christchurch boy in 2005 and he brought me here. Luckily, I fell in love with this city and wanted to stay. Dave and I now have two children, and spend our time chasing them, in between working and doing the normal family stuff.

We’re great believers in community – having worked hard for our local Toy Library which is one of the reasons I set up my community classes. It’s great to be able to offer locals the chance to work out in their own neighbourhood.

I became a Zumba instructor after falling in love with doing the classes myself. I was rapt to find an exercise that was genuinely fun and effective. I still believe you can let loose and dance in a Zumba class more than you can in a nightclub (there’s no need to put on lippy, worry about your hair or wonder if that hottie across the floor can see your cellulite).

Zumba helped me reach my weight loss goal and I’m now determined to help others reach their goals...no matter what they are.

I hope to see you soon - let’s let loose and have some fun.

  • Vanessa T.I personally have a lot of fun and get immense enjoyment from JB's Zumba classes. It's like a big party and you sweat a LOT! After a knee injury last year it is wonderful to participate in an exercise that keeps me fit and doesn't damage my knee joints. It is the highlight of my working week!
  • Loretta D."I never expected to use the words 'fun' and 'exercise' in the same sentence, but Zumba with JB has changed all that for me. JB is awesome at keeping it fun and lighthearted, and because it feels more like dancing than hard work, I'm loving it!
Its so helpful too that she has tailormade the timing of the classes to be perfect for busy parents just like me.
I am thrilled to have finally found an enjoyable way to achieve my fitness and weight-loss goals."
  • Patrick B.JB has the sort of personality that could've been made especially for Zumba. Her enthusiasm is very catchy as is the music; and her promotion of Zumba as a party makes the class great fun.
  • Kate G.Can't believe I can smile & laugh through 50 minutes of hard exercise! JB is inspirational and really takes away the self consciousness of trying a new challenge! Absolutely love Zumba; it is a BLAST!
  • Tiff G.Great night and really enjoyed myself I think I’m hooked.
  • Angela C.Thanks for such a fun evening – and good for me too.
